Lead the governance of one of Aotearoa’s most established social enterprises as it embarks on a new phase of transformation.
About Trade Aid:
For over 50 years, we’ve worked to improve the lives of talented but marginalised producers around the world through long-term, fair trade partnerships. We’re driven by a balance between a genuine sense of purpose, business acumen and clear financial goals. Today, we are reimagining our operating model, shifting from a retail-led homewares presence to a new strategy focused on wholesale and FMCG growth, digital channels, and deepened community engagement.
As we evolve, we are looking for governance leaders who can help guide this reinvention.
Successful applicants will be appointed as Trustees of the Trade Aid Charitable Trust, and in that capacity will also serve as Directors of Trade Aid Importers Ltd. We refer to this role as Director throughout the rest of this advert.
Who We’re Looking For:
We are seeking a Chair and Directors who can bring governance experience and specific skill sets to strengthen the boards of Trade Aid Charitable Trust and its trading arm, Trade Aid Importers Ltd.
This is a unique dual-governance opportunity that combines grassroots community engagement with strategic commercial oversight. The Board governs Trade Aid to ensure the organisation can effectively and sustainably achieve its mission.
We encourage expressions of interest from candidates who have previous experience serving as a Chair. We also welcome applications from both experienced and emerging directors who bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:
● Governance of social enterprises, NGOs, or community organisations in Aotearoa or overseas.
● Legal, risk, or compliance (particularly commercial or trust law)
● Finance, accounting, audit (CA or equivalent preferred)
● Start-up experience or business model innovation
Chair: Leads the board, facilitates meetings, and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer to ensure strong governance and strategic alignment.
Director: Contributes to the collective leadership and decision-making of the Board, with a focus on their individual area of expertise.
Core Qualities:
● Alignment with Trade Aid’s mission, values, and fair trade principles
● Strong judgement, collaboration, and cultural fit
● Passion for social justice
Commitment:
● Voluntary role
● Approx. 1–2 days per month
● Monthly board meetings (in-person preferred), with additional online engagement as needed
● Initial term of three years
Location:
Trade Aid’s head office and distribution warehouse are based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and preference may be given to candidates based nearby. However, we welcome applications from across Aotearoa.
