Cats Design Ayacucho Weaving
Product Code: 17.02.501
This lovely patterned Ayacucho tapestry is a beautiful example of this detailed weaving tradition.
In the high Andean regions of Peru, the Ayacuchan weavers use designs and techniques dating back thousands of years to create a range of vibrant coloured textiles. In ancient Inca civilisations these textiles were prized as valued gifts to strengthen political and religious ties. The first step in the process is to spin the sheep's wool into yarn. The thread is then washed, dyed, washed again and wound into balls ready for weaving on a loom. The
weaving is then done by unmarried sons and young male relatives of this person in a family workshop with its two to four looms. This workshop is often
headed by a master craftsperson responsible for passing on the family's weaving traditions.
