This small thumb piano has a star shaped body which has a pattern burnt onto it, and the tines have recycled tin attached to them to create a pleasant hum. The thumb piano is one of the most widely used instruments in all of Africa and is known by many different names such as Mbira, Mbila, Mbira Huru, Mbira Njari, Mbira Nyunga Nyunga, Marimba, Karimba, Kalimba, Likembe, Okeme, Sanza, and even is represented in the Caribbean as the Marimbula, originating in Cuba and used as the rhythmic bass. Hand crafted by skilled artisans working with Kwanza Collection Company Ltd, one of our fair trade partners in Africa.
This one is too small to be used as a serious musical instrument. It does, however, make a nice decoration for a musician.
