This crimson jewellery pouch is embroidered with a tree of life design and has elements of Abhala mirror work, it closes with a drawstring and is fully lined. The embroidery technique is over a thousand years old and is being kept alive by a group of Catholic nuns who started up a sewing and embroidery centre in the 1980’s. Hand made by skilled artisans working with St Mary’s Mahila Shikshan Kendra, a fair trade organisation in India.

St Mary’s teaches rural women who have migrated to the city of Ahmedabad, in western India, to use their traditional Kathiawadi style of embroidery and mirror work to generate essential income. Women from all religious beliefs unite within this group where education and healthcare are also provided.Read more
