This symbolic brooch features a Mayan family of Mother, Father, child and baby. It was made from scraps of fabric left over from making other products, as a symbol of family which is very important in Latin America. Produced by women who live on the outskirts of Guatemala City in an impoverished area called ‘Esperanza’ (Hope). By working together these women have developed a community medical and dental clinic, tutoring programme, daycare centre plus much more. Most importantly they have maintained a spirit of hope, which many in similar circumstances lost long ago. The women of UPAVIM have donated their labour to making this product and all proceeds go to funding of their new building which will contain more income generating projects. They thank you for purchasing a product that makes a difference.
UPAVIM is a co-operative of women from lower socioeconomic communities learning and working together to improve the quality of life for themselves and their families. The success of UPAVIM has enabled the women to build a school with multiple levels of education for the children of their community.Read more
