Giraffe and baby sculpture

This giraffe and baby stone ornament set is carved from Kisii soapstone. Kisii stone is mined by hand from one of six quarries in Western Kenya. Carvers cut the large rocks into smaller pieces, then chisel a rough shape into the stone. Women then sand-wash the stone pieces and polish them. A clear wax is applied to accentuate the stone’s natural lustre. This set of giraffes takes 6 hours to make. The stone carvers of Kisii are one of many craft groups working alongside Trade Aid’s partner, Undugu.
