This bookmark features a recycled wire dancing figure on handmade water hyacinth paper. Handcrafted by artisans based in communities along the shore of Lake Kisumu in Northern Kenya. Incorporating locally-sourced water hyacinth, seen as a nuisance plant which clogs waterways, in the creation of these products contributes to the conservation of Kenya’s forests. It is washed, then beaten using a traditional pany and blended to create a thick pulp which is spread on to a wire rack for drying.
Recycled materials from written-off cars and tins are also utilised in the design, thereby eliminating waste from the environment.
Hyacinth Crafts started in response to environmental and economic havoc caused by invasive water hyacinth in Lake Victoria. The hyacinth is harvested and made into rope and paper. This work empowers producers through providing employment, income, creativity and a sense of purpose.Read more
