This beautiful bear hanging decoration is festively embroidered in a Christmas jersey and has a beaded collar. The embroidery technique is over a thousand years old and is being kept alive by a group of Catholic nuns who started up a sewing and embroidery centre in the 1980s. Handmade by skilled artisans working with St Mary’s Mahila Shikshan Kendra, a fair trade organisation in India.

The traditional Kathiawadi style of embroidery and mirror work is preserved through St Mary’s work with talented traditional artisans in the west Indian city of Ahmedabad. Women from all religious beliefs unite within this group to collaborate on the creation of high quality work, bringing about economic independence and learning leadership skills.
