Our organic cocoa not only has fresh, new-look packaging, but it’s now packaged in completely sustainable material.
We’ve replaced the plastic inner bag with a home compostable cellophane pouch, which can be composted in your home compost or worm farm. The outer box is still recyclable cardboard and features a new design that we hope you’ll love. We are a sustainably focused organisation that cares about making the best possible environmental decisions for our packaging solutions.
Trade Aid cocoa is a rich, smooth dutch-processed cocoa powder, alkalized to add a deep colour and rich chocolate flavour to your baking and desserts. It is Organic Certified by Assure Quality and Vegan Certified by our friends at the NZ Vegetarian Society.
It is milled from cocoa beans organically grown with care by small-scale cocoa farmers in the Dominican Republic and Peru.
In a world where most cocoa producers are unable to cover their costs of sustainable production and many farmers, including children, are exposed to dangerous working conditions, Trade Aid supports farmers with long term relationships and higher prices.
Our commitment to fair trade relationships enables the growers we trade with to avoid the harsh realities that dominate today’s cocoa industry.
For many cocoa farmers and their families, the situation is getting worse. In June 2020 an official report funded by the US Department of Labor found that over the last ten years the proportion of children engaged in dangerous child labour in cocoa production rose from 30 to 41%. This finding came from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, the two largest cocoa-producing countries in the world. It amounts to around two million children engaged in hazardous, difficult cocoa production work.
In these two countries, 90% of farmers rely on cocoa for an income. The bottom line is that farmers need to be paid more for their cocoa and children should be in school.
As the world’s consumption of cocoa continues to grow and major cocoa-producing countries increase their production to keep up with demand, it becomes ever more important for consumers to know who’s behind their cocoa supply chain. To avoid child labour being an ingredient in your cocoa, you need to know who you’re buying from. Buying Trade Aid cocoa powder empowers small scale cocoa farmers to improve their lives and their communities through fair trade.
Doing good really does taste great!
