Harar coffee comes from the North East, predominantly Muslim part of Ethiopia, in the region close to the ancient walled city of Harar. The environment is high, dry and mountainous and is one of the oldest coffee growing regions in the world.
Rega Damu is one of the primary societies of Oromia Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union (OCFCU) representing over 900 farming families in the region of East Harar. In recent years Rega Damu have used their fair trade social premiums to fund initiatives such as warehousing, transport and construction of spring water systems.
Due to the arid environment, Harar has always been a natural processed coffee, dried in the cherry on the farm on raised mesh beds. The finished coffee can be quite uneven and wild in the cup, but this is part of what is unique about Harar.
