This month we are excited to launch a limited edition, single origin organic coffee from Mexico.
Trade Aid is New Zealand’s major supplier of fair trade, organic green coffee beans. We source a wide and varied range of fair trade green coffee beans from small- scale coffee producers in nine different countries. This month we are excited to launch a limited edition, single origin coffee from Mexico.
This coffee comes from the community of Kotolté, the largest town in the municipality of Tenejapa in Chiapas. It is grown by a small group of farmers who are one of the 50 communities making up the San Fernando cooperative.
The population of Kotolté is almost entirely indigenous, predominantly speaking the Mayan language, Tzeltal, and traditional dress and customs are still common. Coffee is the main cash crop, providing the majority of a family’s income. However families tend to have only small plots of land and alongside the coffee they have to grow subsistence crops such as corn, beans, chilli and chayote. Women do the bulk of the work on the farms, and are supported by technical staff from the San Fernando Cooperative.
This is a bold coffee with chocolate and plum aromas and winey acidity. It has flavours of berry, almond and coconut with a rich and full body.Â
This limited-edition organic coffee is available in both ground and beans, exclusively from Trade Aid stores nationwide, and online.
