March 8th is International Women’s Day
The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) says:
“Women are key to gender equality and sustainable development. The world will be fairer and better place for everyone when women go high up in their political, economic and social participation.
Fair trade contributes to gender equality through fair trade principle six that ensures gender equality measures are in place and enforced by organisations in the supply chain. This is embedded in the WFTO Fair Trade Standard and its compliance is verified and monitored through the Guarantee System regularly. Fair trade leads the way to gender equality and women empowerment.
A survey in January 2018 among member organisations of WFTO revealed that:
51% governance/decision making positions were held by women
52% chief executive positions were women
54% other senior management roles were held by women”
A quick count at Trade Aid New Zealand shows that:
50% of our board positions are held by women
57% of our Development Committee members are women
40% of our executive team are women
44% of our leadership team roles were held by women
