This sculpture is carved from Kisii soapstone which is mined from one of six quarries in Western Kenya. Miners work in the quarries in four-hour shifts, mining the stone by hand. They chisel the pieces loose and lift the rocks to the top of the mine with metal chains. Carvers cut the large rocks into smaller pieces, then chisel a rough shape into the stone. Women then sandwash the stone pieces and polish them. A clear wax is then applied to accentuate the stone’s natural lustre.
