This ocarina is a colourful little musical instrument, a vessel-flute with four fingerholes and a cheery sound. Although it looks like an ordinary fipple-flute, this is an ocarina with one fingerhole left permanently unstopped.
Ocarinas were a staple musical instrument of the pre-Columbian Meso-American and South American musical culture, and have been discovered in archeological sites dating back to before 2000 BCE. They indicate a high level of musical culture, being used as solo and ensemble instruments; consequently they may not be tuned to the common European equal-temperament scale.
