This beautiful San Pedro de Cajas tapestry weaving demonstrates how a traditional skill has evolved to produce a contemporary weaving style in response to the demands of the outside world, but one which still retains the use of traditional fibres, dyes and weaving styles.
The weavers from the village of San Pedro de Cajas use the unusual technique of 'wadding' to produce a tapestry which is more like a painting and which allows more room for individuality and creative talent of the weaver than is the case of the purely traditional practice where all members of the community express themselves using common symbols.
The whole family is involved in the making of the tapestries, with the men doing the weaving and the women preparing the wool and helping with the dyeing process.
The designs on the tapestries are either abstract, or scenes of local life and custom. San Pedro de Cajas is a beautiful town in the Andes, surrounded by the mountains, and MINKA have taken photographs of the town and encourage the weavers to use the scenes in their tapestries. Often the artisans include their own houses and even their families in the tapestries.
