Celebration of Fair Trade Fortnight: 1 - 16 May 2010

Fair Trade Fortnight Just Women

This Fair Trade Fortnight (May 1-16) Trade Aid is highlighting the positive impact fair trade has on women working in developing countries with the theme for the fortnight being “'Just Women - justice for women by women”.

Mother’s Day falls during the Fortnight too, so it is a great time for Kiwi’s to show their support for women around the world, and those closer to home, by buying Trade Aid’s products.

During Fair Trade Fortnight Trade Aid shops around the country will be:

  • running in-store celebrations—product sampling,  coffee mornings and more...
  • holding community events and talks (request a speaker from your local shop during The Fortnight)
  • hosting our Nepalese trading partner, Meera Bhattarai - a leader of the fair trade movement in Nepal, as she tours New Zealand.

Check the activities and events that are happening here:  (more events will be added throughout April so check back or talk to your local Trade Aid shop about getting involved)

Our main feature film is Maquilapolis, City of Factories

“Maquilapolis is a wonderful fusion of expose and imagination, delivering an unprecedented look into the realities of life in the border communities where the maquiladoras reign. Made in collaboration with the women whose lives center on these secretive factories, Maquilapolis succeeds in crossing borders and peering around corners to capture how the women caught in the contradictions of global capital understand their own positions."
    B. Ruby Rich, Community Studies Department & Social Documentation Program, University of California, Santa Cruz

“A portrait of the perils of globalization that admirably seeks new forms of expression…..A stirring work that’ll provoke genuine outrage.”

The Environment: Environmental Justice

The people we work with have some of the smallest environmental footprints in the world. They buy few consumer goods, eat locally produced food and use hand production methods to earn their living, or use traditional farming methods. Yet it is also the world's poor who are the biggest losers in terms of their vulnerability to changes in our climate and weather patterns. Our trading partners and producers are part of this group, so as partners in a relationship; this is an issue of justice that we need to highlight.

Fair trade helps to create environmental justice. Fair trade products have a minimal carbon footprint and will therefore lower a consumer's own carbon footprint when they choose to purchase fair trade. This purchase also provides fair trade producers with terms of trade that allow them the ability to continue preserving their own environment for future generations.

Check out Trade Aid's environmental policy, and how we are helping to create environmental justice with those we trade with.
